Beaches and Bunkers: A Wargame for 2 Players

By Mike Lambo

Beaches and Bunkers is a “dice placement” or “dice allocation” game for two players which loosely represents ten beach landings made by Allied Forces during World War II, both in Normandy, France and in the Pacific Islands. Each landing is designed to be small-scale and represents perhaps one or two boats landing on specific parts of the beaches. The various landings depicted try to reflect some of the actual situations and events as they happened, but this is meant to be an accessible game which is quick and easy to play and so it is by no means a complex simulation. It is an ideal game to use to introduce people to war games, or perhaps to play with a younger member of your family. Anyone aged 10 or above should be able to grasp the key rules and tactics required. Note that the various beach landings depicted are not often equally balanced. In most, if not all, cases it is easier to play as the German or Japanese defenders (the Axis) in the Bunkers rather than as the Allies on the Beaches. As games usually only take about 10-20 minutes or so to play, it is recommended that the players swap sides after playing a particular beach, and only assess the ‘score’ after an even number of games has been played (so that each player plays each side an equal number of times). -description from designer
