Tanglung

By Mark William · Art by Yuki Koe Gaik Kee

The Malay word tanglung (pronounced as tahng-loong) is a direct loan from the Chinese term for paper lanterns: dēng lóng (灯笼), literally meaning "light" and "basket". Brought to the Malay Archipelago by early Chinese traders and immigrants, the traditional paper lantern has been part of the Chinese celebration of the Mid-Autumn Festival for centuries. In Malaysia, it has become a vibrant multi-cultural experience where children of all backgrounds would light up animal-shaped tanglung and walk around their neighbourhoods together, quietly thinking they are carrying the best lantern of all. Tanglung is tactical duel that captures that moment of quiet competition amidst glowing lanterns. Players move their matchbox through a grid of 16 Tanglung cards, to light up lanterns, block paths, and jostle for position. Victory is claimed when the final lantern is lit, or when their opponent has no valid moves remaining, or when you bump their matchbox twice. On your turn, choose: EITHER 1) A ROOSTER ACTION a. Move your Matchbox 1 orthogonal step to an unoccupied & unblocked Tanglung card. If not yet lit, "light up" that Tanglung card by flipping it over to its lit side. b. Then mandatorily Place the Fan on any unoccupied Tanglung card. The Fan blocks a Tanglung card. No matchbox can move to or over the card it blocks. OR 2) A LANTERN ACTION a. Move your Matchbox according to the action of that particular lit lantern you are at to any unblocked Tanglung card. If not yet lit, "light up" that Tanglung card you move to by flipping it over to its lit side. b. If another player's Matchbox is already on the Tanglung card you move to, Bump the other player's Matchbox out of the grid. Once bumped, the other player needs to flip their Matchbox to the other side and use their next turn to place their Matchbox onto an unoccupied lit Tanglung card. If there are no unoccupied lit Tanglung cards for them to come back to, you win this match. Be first to win 2 matches to claim victory! Winning conditions: Light up the last Tanglung The other player cannot move Bump the other player's Matchbox twice Every turn in Tanglung is a careful balance of timing, positioning, and control -- where illumination and disruption go hand in hand! —description from the designer
