Mission Zelle

By Daniel Hitzing, Erik Robert · Art by Bojana Maricic

Mission Zelle is an educational board game about cell biology, protein biosynthesis, organelle functions and intracellular transport. Players control three production paths inside a cell. On their turn, they collect and play matching sets of three cards that represent biological production steps, such as DNA, transcription and mRNA. To use a set, the active player must correctly describe the biological process shown on the cards. If the explanation is accepted by the other players, the player spends ATP and moves the corresponding pawn forward on its production path. The goal is to be the first player to bring all three of their protein-production pawns to the end of their paths, representing proteins reaching their correct destinations in the cytosol, the endoplasmic reticulum or outside the cell. ATP is managed through the mitochondrion, and special cards can provide additional energy. The game also includes a plant-cell variant on the reverse side of the board, adding chloroplast, cell wall and vacuole-related content. Mission Zelle combines set collection, resource management and educational explanation tasks. It is designed for biology lessons and focuses on compartmentalization, protein biosynthesis, organelle cooperation, vesicular transport and biological terminology.
