Finding a Star

By Bill Chung

Randomly place a star token, several elephant tokens, a pawn for each player, and a bean token in each player's color onto a 25 X 25 square grid. Each player also chooses two navigational cards, each of which displays a direction and distance of movement. Players take turns rolling a die and then allocating the result between the two cards (e.g., roll a 6 and allocate four to one card and two to the other). For each card, the player then moves his pawn the appropriate distance (the allocated number times the number on the card) and direction. When a player's pawn passes through an elephant token, the player receives an elephant card that will allow him to add obstacles to the grid or to break rules by, say, transporting a token or pawn. Choose an additional navigation card when you pass through your bean token or, if you do not pass through your bean token, at the end of the round. The round ends when a player's pawn reaches the star token after first passing through that player's bean token. That player receives points based on player count, and the other players receive fewer points based upon how close they came to the star token. Re-populate the grid as at the beginning of the game and play two more rounds. Then, in addition to the points scored during the game, score a point for each unused elephant card, and score the sum of the numbers on your navigation cards. Most points wins.
