Royal Ascent

Royal Ascent is a competitive abstract strategy system built on the foundation of classical chess, and the first full rules-preserving overlay framework designed for a traditional board game. Players compete on a standard 8×8 board using the complete, unmodified rules of chess. Layered on top is the Royal Framework Overlay: a modular interpretive system that adds new tactical incentives, positional states, and layered strategic interactions without replacing the foundational rules structure, movement authority, or victory conditions of classical chess. Instead of replacing classical chess, Royal Ascent expands the strategic landscape surrounding it. Familiar positions gain new meaning, long-term planning becomes more dynamic, and each match develops its own strategic character while remaining fully compatible with traditional play. The system is designed to preserve the clarity and competitive integrity of chess while enabling deeper layers of tension, adaptation, and decision-making. Royal Ascent is fully playable with a standard chess set and requires no digital components.
