Panzerkeil: Battle of Kharkiv
By Makoto Fukuda
On November 19, 1942, the Soviet counteroffensive "Uranus" was launched. The Soviets, with seven armies, broke through the Romanian flank of the German 6th Army. The 6th Army at Stalingrad was quickly surrounded, and the tide of battle turned. Faced with this dire situation, the German general Manstein, one of the most brilliant strategists, launched "Winter Storm," a rescue operation for the 6th Army, on December 12. The German 57th Panzer Corps came within 50 km of Stalingrad. At this point, the Soviet army launched a major encirclement operation aimed at Rostov. The rescue operation was called off, and the 6th Army's fate was sealed. In 1943, the focus of the battle shifted from Stalingrad to Rostov. The Soviet army advanced like a raging torrent. Manstein deployed a mobile defense strategy and successfully defended Rostov Gate. The 1st Panzer Army retreated safely, and the last vehicles of the 4th Panzer Army, which had been protecting its flank and serving as the rearguard, crossed Rostov Gate on January 31st. On the same day, the 6th Army surrendered. Furthermore, around that time, another crisis loomed over the German army. The Soviet army was advancing towards Kharkiv and the Dnieper River. If the Soviet army crossed the Dnieper River, the entire German Southern Army would be surrounded, and a tragedy even greater than Stalingrad would unfold. ... However, Manstein waited. Even when the Soviet army recaptured Kharkiv and advanced within 60km of the Dnieper River, he did not move. On February 28th, he issued orders to his troops. "Fight back!"
