Il Trono di Carte

By Brian Train

Il Trono di Carte ("The Throne of Cards") is a light historical card-driven game set during the Italian Risorgimento. It is a two-player game in which players take on the roles of Victor Emmanuel II, King of Italy, and Francis II of Bourbon, King of the Two Sicilies. The game begins after Garibaldi’s victorious Expedition of the Thousand, when the Italian state has just been unified. After his defeat, Francis II takes refuge with Pope Pius IX in Rome and attempts to reclaim his kingdom by any means at his disposal—diplomacy, intrigue, propaganda, guerrilla warfare... His last cards to play are adventurers, bandits, criminal patriots... in a word: Brigands! The game takes place during the period of the great war for Southern Italy, the War on Brigandage. A five-year period (1861–1865) that saw tens of thousands of soldiers pitted against thousands of outlaws in Italy’s first civil war, one that was never officially declared. Players compete in both the political and military spheres, using cards that simulate the various available assets. Careful use of one’s resources and the pursuit of strictly historical card combinations allow players to recreate this conflict that bloodied the unification of the Kingdom of Italy. The game was produced under the patronage of the National Museum of the Risorgimento in Turin, Italy.
