Board Game
Whack a Waka
A Japanese poem-matching card game in the form of a karuta. The goal of the game is to collect as many cards as the player can, by matching segments of poems. The first hundred reading cards (yomifuda) each contain a full poem, while the second hundred playing cards (torifuda) each contain the final phrase of the poem. To play, one player chooses a reading card and begins reading the poem, while the other players search through the face-up, spread-out playing cards to find the matching final verse of the poem; the matching reading cards and player cards also have unique artwork that spans across the pair of cards. Players take turns being the reader until all reading cards have been read, and the player with the most correct poem matches wins. The game is based on the historical Japanese poetry collection 'One Hundred Poets, One Poem Each' (Hyakunin Isshu).
