Tigers & Beasts: Counterattack at Staszow-Stopnica – August 1944, Poland
By Perry Moore
The massive Russian offensive had arrived in Poland by August, 1944. It had advanced hundreds of miles reaching the limits of how far it could go. Units had established a bridgehead at the Vistula, but the Germans were fanatical in their defenses creating fast moving battles as their panzer units went from one location to another to stop them! When the Russians reached Staszow, alarm bells went off for the Germans and their major counterattack began using the new King Tiger Pz VIIb "wonder" weapon of the 501st Battalion. The unit has just completed training and rushed to the front. It would face the mighty Russian, JS-2, "Beast killer". At Stopnica, Russian units had penetrated, the 3rd Panzer Corps raced to meet them head-on in the crazy, see-saw battle for the city. It would involve hundreds of tanks. —description from the publisher
