The White War: WW1 on the Alpine Front

By Daniele Cerin · Art by Daniele Cerin

While soldiers in France were drowning in mud and the fighting on the Eastern front raged through forests and marshlands, an entirely different kind of war unfolded high in the snow-covered Alps. The struggle between Austria-Hungary and Italy remains a largely unexplored setting for wargaming. In this rule set, you and an opponent will recreate the brutal alpine clashes along a small stretch of the front between Cortina and Toblach. This theater was defined by frigid winters and staggering altitudes. Troops on both sides scaled near-vertical rock faces while hauling artillery and supplies, cutting supply paths into sheer cliffs, and digging trenches along exposed ridgelines. This is not a miniature wargame but rather a board wargame CDG. You will have to print several sheets, the board and the decks of cards for both factions. I initially made this to be able to game on a diorama map of a small section of the alpine front. At some pointed I decided that I had done enough work that I wanted to be able to share it with the community, so I polished the rules and created all the necessary files to print it and play it. —description from the designer
