Mission Membrane: Sugar into the Bloodstream
By Daniel Hitzing, Erik Robert
In Mission Membrane, players take on the role of microscopic helpers inside the human body, guiding glucose molecules from the digestive system into the bloodstream. Mira and Carlos are preparing for a 10K run, and they need energy—fast! Your mission is to ensure that the glucose from their pre-race banana reaches their cells in time. Gameplay This cooperative educational game simulates the biological process of nutrient absorption through cell membranes. Players must work together to: Use membrane proteins strategically Manage ion gradients (sodium, potassium) Transport glucose molecules from the intestine into the blood Each turn involves drawing and playing cards to activate specific transport mechanisms. The game includes a tutorial mode for easy onboarding and offers two difficulty levels: with or without "Backup" cards that simplify gameplay. Educational Value Mission Membrane is ideal for classrooms or science enthusiasts. It introduces key biological concepts such as: Active and passive transport Membrane proteins Concentration gradients Win Condition The game ends when all glucose molecules have either been successfully transported into the bloodstream or removed from play. The more glucose you deliver, the better your team’s performance! —description from the publisher
