O.OQUO: The Forgotten Game
By Mario Faiella
OQUO is a minimalist, abstract strategy game inspired by the quiet focus of nomadic traditions and the timeless idea of balance. I first encountered the game 2017 during a journey with nomads in the tundra. OQUO uses just 25 “Earthstones” to form the board and 4 “Gamestones” per side. Despite its simplicity, it offers surprising depth, calm tension, and space for shared reflection. Players take turns moving their stones across a 5×5 grid — in any direction, including diagonally — with the goal of forming a square using all four of their Gamestones. The board never changes, but the possibilities constantly shift. Positioning, awareness, and timing are key. OQUO is for 2 players, but can also be played in small teams. Teammates quietly plan moves together, whisper strategies, and try to anticipate their opponent’s next step — much like a silent conversation around a fire. The asymmetry of team sizes is allowed and even encouraged, just as it often was in its storytelling origin. Compact, quiet, and intentional, OQUO fits into any travel pouch and any moment of pause. It’s about presence over pressure — and finding clarity through simple movement. —description from the publisher
