カニナリエビ (Kani nari Ebi)
By かぶきけんいち (Kenichi Kabuki) · Art by たかみまこと (Makoto Takami)
Kani nari Ebi is a variant of Hasami Shogi played on a 5x5 board. Two players place their team of Red or Blue Crab pieces on their home column of the board and proceed by alternatively moving one piece per turn. A Crab can move any number of spaces, but only horizontally. When entering the opponent's home column, a player has a choice of promoting their Crab to a Shrimp, which can move one space in any diagonal direction. Stopping on the River column in the middle of the board forces a piece to float either up or down until it hits an obstacle. Stopping near a group of orthogonally connected friendly pieces provides a player with a bonus action, which allows moving any piece of the group as if it was a Shrimp. Any number of opponent's pieces clamped between friendly pieces gets captured. The victory is achieved in one of 3 ways: By promoting 3 Crabs. By capturing 3 opponent's pieces. By ensuring the opponent doesn't have any valid moves.
