Buccaneers of the Americas

By Addison Edgar · Art by Addison Edgar

Buccaneers of the Americas is a solitaire action roleplaying game set in the "Golden Age of Buccaneering", specifically in and between the years 1650 and 1700, when privateers and pirates, known under dozens of similar names in several different languages, cruised the waters of the Caribbean Sea, taking prizes and sacking cities with the often overt support of the imperial European empires abroad. Inspired in part by the 1987 Commodore 64 classic, Sid Meier's Pirates!, Buccaneers of the Americas presents players with opportunity to plunder ships and sack settlements of the Spanish Main with a strong emphasis on historicity (no buried treasure, 90-gun pirate galleons, or "jolly rogers" here!). Players assume the role of a buccaneer commander initially aligned to one of four empires: The Kingdom of England, the Kingdom of France, the Dutch Republic, or the Spanish Empire. From there, the game is inherently open-ended in nature, and captains are free to perform any available action or travel anywhere on the authentic hex-grid map of the Middle America region until the end of the game when, hopefully, they are still alive and can retire rich and in fair health. Buccaneers of the Americas requires two ten-sided (d10) dice to play, and may be (but is not required) enhanced by taking notes and keeping a log on a separate sheet of paper, or digitally with any free word-like program, as your captain's story develops. —description from the designer
