José García Saves the Alhambra

By Matt Kelly · Art by Matt Kelly

During the Spanish War of Independence in the early 1800s, Napoleon's army occupied the centuries-old Islamic fortress and palace in Granada: the Alhambra. When the French finally withdrew before advancing Spanish and allied forces, the French commander ordered the destruction of the Alhambra with explosives. But one Spanish soldier, José García, despite having injury and wounds from a previous battle, raced through the 26-acre complex, disarming bombs and saving this amazing piece of history. José García Saves the Alhambra is a solitaire game commemorating this story. All you need is a regular deck of cards and one six-sided die to play.
