Patriots & Loyalists: Rules for the American Revolution

By Arty Conliffe, Scott Holder · Art by Henry Alexander Ogden

Patriots and Loyalists is a set of miniatures rules for gaming the smaller battles of the American Revolution and French and Indian War. While designed for 25mm figures on an 8'x5' table, the game can be played with 15mm or smaller scales and adjusting movement and firing distances. Units in the game are infantry battalions, cavalry regiments, and artillery batteries. Typical organizations require 6-9 stands of infantry, which include command stands and stands of grenadiers and/or light infantry. Light infantry and grenadiers can be converged into their own organizations if desired. Units are rated A-F depending on training and morale. This affects movement as well, in that lower grades of troops require multiple actions to carry out formation changes. The turn sequence is as follows: 1. Active player determines number of actions available (2-4) 2. If Active player has 3-4 actions, he may use these actions to move and/or fire units as desired. If he rolls only 2 actions, the Reactive player is allowed to Preempt or react (e.g., evading). 3. Melee phase. 4. Brigade morale phase.
