Kiribati

By Nicole Zeller, Till Meyer · Art by Andreas Langner

The wonderful island of Kiribati, like many islands in the Pacific, is threatened by climate change. In the foreseeable future, Kiribati will be washed over by rising sea levels and sink. People can be evacuated by ships and boats - but what about the animals? Fortunately, numerous turtles swim from west to east between Kiribati and the rescuing mainland, and Kiribati's animals can save themselves by jumping from turtle to turtle. But beware. Turtles have their own ideas. They may well swim deeper, or submerge completely. This makes the space on their shells smaller and smaller until it disappears completely. Kiribati is a small tactical game. The goal is to move all his animals to the mainland. The first to do this wins the game. The game ends immediately. Each Player try to be the first reaching the mainland with all your 5 animals by using dice and action cards. Kiribati can be played in three variants (children, family, professional). Each round the player rolls two dice. The number of dice decides where and whether the player may insert a new turtle or let it swim further, or whether a turtle rises or dives. Next, the player may place one of his animals from the island on a turtle. The player's third action is to move all of his animals one turtle further. Each animal (kagu, rabbit, coala, lizard, monkey) has its own properties for movement. Additionally, the player may play an action card and annoy teammates or defend himself to other teammates. In the professional variant, events can occur at the beginning of each round. The professional variant is played with victory points.
