Alligators, Dice & Doors

By Mike Ellison · Art by Mike Ellison

Alligators, Dice & Doors is similar to Snakes & Ladders in game play, although generally faster. It's made to be a simple dice-rolling game to help familiarize youngsters with larger numbers and simple arithmetic, and the goal is simply to get from Start to Finish across 69 squares between them. It uses polyhedral dice (4, 6, 8, 10, 12, and 20 sided) and a rolling mechanic for backwards steps - if a player lands on an alligator square, they roll the 6-sided die and move backwards. The "Doors" in the game refer to portals similar to the ladders in Snakes & Ladders. Under basic rules, these are one-way and treated the same. Alternatively, each door has a number. Upon entering, the player may roll an eight-sided die to determine the output location.
