Aljubarrota: The Royal Battle
By David M Santos-Mendes · Art by Daniel Souto, David M Santos-Mendes
The theme of this card game is the Battle of Aljubarrota, fought in 1385 between Portugal and Spain. There are two king cards and 42 cards organised in 7 'suits' (crowns, shields, banners, archers, people, cavalry, infantry) each with 6 values and colours. Each player takes a king card and half the shuffled deck face down. Each player draws a card from their their pile and places it face up. From then on each player draws a card from their pile and places it in one of the face up piles, if it matches the suit, colour or value. If not, either it returns to the bottom of the pile, or it is placed together with a king card on any pile. The aim is to be the first to get rid of their cards.
